Take the night tour if you want the illuminated river cruise and a trishaw ride, with someone else driving the two hours back to Kuala Lumpur. They are not the same trip in different light. Day. Want to feel it? Night. Both, ideally, on separate visits. In daylight the story is the point: the plaques, the climb up St Paul’s Hill, what happened here in 1511. After dark the river is the point. The painted shophouse facades reflect off the water, the bridges are lit, and the decorated trishaws come out. Both are worth the 150 km from Kuala Lumpur. The red Stadthuys stops being an old red building and becomes a Dutch town hall, put up after they took the town from the Portuguese. The tour leaves Kuala Lumpur at 08:30, which puts you in the old town through the middle of the morning: the coach parties are thinning out and the climb up St Paul’s Hill has not yet become a chore in the heat. Before 10 AM is better still, and that means staying in Malacca overnight. After dark the brickwork stops being the subject and the water does. It works for families with children old enough to stay up. Evening, for most visitors: the bridges and shophouses are lit after dark, and the cruise sails daily from 9 AM with last boarding at 11 PM. For photographs, before 10 AM beats everything, with cooler air and thinner crowds on Dutch Square. Come Friday to Sunday if you want the Jonker Walk night market as well, and expect evening cruise slots to sell out for walk-ups on weekends and public holidays. ## Doing both, in the right order If you have the time, do both, in that order. The context you pick up in daylight is what makes the lit buildings mean something after dark. The other way round you get a nice evening and then a history lesson about a place you have already seen. Staying overnight saves you making the 150 km trip twice.
